Accommodation

The easiest place to stay is the Garrison Hotel itself, the venue is really a taxi ride away from the centre of the city and the train station. You can get breakfast and roll right into the games. The rooms are chalet-like, chintzy and a bit basic. However there is a small car park and it sits on the ring road.

When I checked in I was warned that there was “a function” on in the building and would I like a room away from the main body of the hotel. I was imaging a wedding or birthday party and assured the receptionist that it would be fine.

The first night was a Bruno Mars tribute band and the second a dinner and dance with a big soundsystem. Both nights the music went on till just past midnight and the sound vibrated through the room. Lesson learned there!

Food

If you’re staying at the hotel then it makes sense to get breakfast as well as the room. There’s a buffet of fruit and cereal along with hot breakfast order.

The hotel allows attendees to bring food in for lunch. Some people had a Deliveroo order (which looked delicious) but there is a Morrison’s round the corner from the hotel and it is was easy to get food from there.

A sheet for ordering food from the hotel’s restaurant circulated during the day and food was delivered up to the rooms used for the gaming in the evening.

The Garrison’s menu is very pubby: burgers, hunter’s chicken, steaks and so on. The mixed grill was a bit of a meat riot and pretty good value for money.
