Troika

Troika is a modern re-invention of the Advanced Fighting Fantasy system with an attached implied multiverse game world of crystal spheres.

It is written by Daniel Sell.

While the rule system is relatively generic it has a strong tone of weird fantasy, embodied in its character types which is the primary way that the implied setting for the game is communicated.

Rules

The system has three main stats: Skill, Stamina and Luck. For the most part the rules are basically the same as Fighting Fantasy.

Skills are tested by rolling under the character’s base Skill and any relevant Advanced Skill or modifiers they have.

Combat

Combat varies a bit more with the use of initiative cards that randomise both when a character will act and how many actions they have in a turn. Characters and NPCs contribute initiative cards to a shared deck, along with a “turn end” card which ends the current turn when drawn.

All the cards are shuffled together and then drawn one at a time, with the relevant character acting when their card is drawn.

Damage is determined by rolling against tables for each weapon type which randomises damage but within a predefined spread of values.
